Willamette Speedway Ignites New Era with Record-Breaking NASCAR Debut
LEBANON, OR —
Willamette Speedway opened the 2026 racing season with a powerhouse debut, marking its inaugural season under the NASCAR banner. A near-capacity crowd filled the grandstands to witness the first-ever NASCAR-sanctioned event at the famed one-third-mile oval, with fans lining up from the box office to the highway to secure a seat for the historic opener.
Once the green flag dropped, the night delivered nonstop action as drivers began their pursuit of the first-ever NASCAR track championship. The transition to the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series powered by O’Reilly Auto Parts was driven by a commitment to the competitors; for the first time in over a decade, the track features a robust season points fund.
The Division I (Late Model) champion is set to collect a $7,000 championship check, with $3,500 provided by NASCAR and matched by track owners Cory and Sandra Penfold. The Penfolds are matching the NASCAR payout through the top five positions and paying out through the top ten—an unprecedented move in the region.
"It will definitely enhance the show for the fans," said promoter Cory Penfold. "Providing a payout like this increases car counts and gives teams more opportunities for sponsorship and national recognition. My team and I studied this program top to bottom. Every promoter I spoke with in the Weekly Racing Series reported nothing but success—increased revenue, better marketing support, and facility improvements that benefit everyone from the drivers to the fans."
Sandra Penfold shared that excitement, noting the broader impact on the local economy. "The racetrack already brings millions of dollars to the surrounding communities. With the NASCAR sanction, the increase in attendance benefits our local hotels, gas stations, and grocery stores. It truly benefits all of us."
Reflecting on the timing of the transition, Sandra added, "Cory wanted to join the NASCAR family last year, but after his battle with stage four cancer, he waited until he could personally lead the facility into this new era. He is doing much better health-wise and is ready for the challenge. It’s impressive how involved the NASCAR sanctioning body is; Cory is constantly working with officials in Daytona and North Carolina to ensure the future growth of this track."
Tanner Dominated the "Dirty Diamond 60"
On the track, five-time and defending champion Joey Tanner proved why he is one of the best in the business. Tanner claimed the "Dirty Diamond 60" season opener in dominating fashion, piloting the Darren Coffell-owned Rocket Chassis sponsored by Driving Force Graphics, BioMed, and Pub Light.
"I’ve got experience in this program and fully understand the benefits," Tanner said. "The points fund and the driver insurance make a massive difference compared to other sanctioning bodies. I think once all the drivers see how this move supports the sport, they’ll truly appreciate what the Penfolds are doing."
Tanner and the Coffell team have committed to chasing four separate titles in 2026: the track, state, regional, and national championships within the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series.
